Steel vs. Wood vs. Fibreglass Doors: Which Is Best for Your Ontario Home?
Written by Alex Ott on November 3, 2025

Your front door does more than welcome guests. It protects, insulates, and defines your home’s character. Your entrance door can also come in a variety of shapes, sizes and materials. Each one has its pros and cons when it comes to the aesthetics of your property, security and energy efficiency. In this article, we compare the main materials for entry doors: steel, wood, and fibreglass.
Steel Doors

Steel doors are tough, stable, and resist warping in fluctuating weather. Their foam-core insulation offers excellent thermal performance, making them a smart choice for Ontario’s cold winters. Maintenance is low, and they’re often the most budget-friendly option.
However, steel can dent or scratch, and once the finish is damaged, rust can follow. Paint chips over time, and colour options are limited compared to natural wood or textured fibreglass.
Pros:
- Strong and secure
- Affordable
- Energy-efficient
- Low maintenance
Cons:
- Can dent or rust if scratched
- Limited colour and style options
- Lacks the natural warmth of wood

Nothing matches the depth, texture, and craftsmanship of a real wood door. It’s warm to the touch and can be stained or painted for a new look whenever you update your exterior. Scratches and dings are easy to sand and refinish, and quality hardwood doors can last decades with care.
That care, however, is ongoing. Wood expands, contracts, and absorbs moisture, which can cause warping, cracking, or peeling. Regular refinishing is essential, and wood doors tend to be less energy-efficient than other materials. They’re also typically the most expensive.
Pros:
- Timeless, natural beauty
- Fully customizable with stain or paint
- Easy to repair or refinish
- Adds classic curb appeal
Cons:
- High maintenance, requires regular refinishing
- Expensive upfront
- Can warp, crack, or absorb moisture
- Less energy-efficient than other options
Fibreglass Doors

Fibreglass doors bridge the gap between performance and appearance. They mimic the grain and tone of real wood but don’t warp, crack, or rust. They’re highly energy-efficient and resist dents, making them ideal for busy households. Many models can be stained or painted, allowing full design flexibility.
There are a few downsides. While the texture is remarkably realistic, it’s still not true wood and premium fibreglass doors can cost nearly as much as real timber.
Pros:
- Extremely durable and weather-resistant
- Low maintenance
- Highly energy-efficient
- Realistic woodgrain finishes available
- Won’t warp, rot, or rust
Cons:
- Can be costly for premium styles
- Texture isn’t genuine wood
- Repairs are more complex if damaged
Comparing the Three Directly
| Feature | Steel | Wood | Fibreglass |
| Durability | Very high, but prone to dents | Strong, but sensitive to weather | Excellent, resists warping and dents |
| Energy Efficiency | Excellent | Moderate | Excellent |
| Maintenance | Low | High | Very low |
| Cost | $$ | $$$ | $$–$$$ |
| Aesthetics | Modern, sleek | Warm, classic | Customizable, realistic wood looks |
Choosing the Right Door for Your Home
Your decision comes down to your replacement/renovation priorities:
- Want the lowest maintenance and highest efficiency? Choose fibreglass.
- Want unbeatable strength on a budget? Choose steel.
- Want timeless natural beauty? Choose wood.
When selecting, also consider your home’s exposure to sun and rain, how often the door will be used, and whether appearance or practicality matters more to you.
