We are very happy with Alex and Artisan Contracting. We purchased a house and initiated a significant renovation and addition which was almost like a new build. It was completed on-time and Alex was responsive throughout the 8 month process. There were unexpected issues as one would expect but they were never Alex’s fault and he actively addressed them in consultation with us. We highly recommend Alex and Artisan Contracting! Some before and after pictures are attached.
Outstanding Work AGAIN!!!
This is the second MAJOR project we have undertaken with Artisan, and once again the results were incredible.
The first being a floor main floor renovation which included Kitchen, Living Room, Laundry and Mud room in 2011. So when it came to the completion of our principle ensuite the decision was EASY!
From concept to budget to execution Alex and and his team were flawless. Artisan is clearly focused on creating a positive customer experience and delivering exceptional quality and we couldn't be happier with results. If you are seeking a contractor to complete a project I would encourage you to consider Artisan.

Alex and his team, and his network of tradespeople, did a fantastic job on my home renovation. This was a big project and Alex kept it moving along at a great pace. He is responsive and responsible, and does what he says he will do, on time and on budget. That is saying quite a bit! Alex is very knowledgeable and provided background detail, insight, advice and support whenever I asked. The work was excellent and Alex clearly takes pride in a job well done. I felt that I was getting excellent value for my money and I would recommend Alex without hesitation to anyone looking to hire a contractor.

TLDR: Alex and the Artisan crew were great! I would definitely use them again. Very respectful crew and Alex is VERY good at communicating in a timely manner. He is also very transparent with his prices and his markup. Also, everyone is licensed and insured.

We had a washroom leak with walls ripped open etc. We did not want to go with the restoration company through insurance because we didn't know the quality of their work. After several quotes from different contractors and going to see their work first hand, we decided to go with Artisan because of the quality and the price point.

Things we liked:
- their work is really good quality and they are very detailed and always very professional
- Alex is there checking out the work and definitely when starting the work to make sure what was discussed with him is what's being executed. For example: we had the plumber come in and put back the plumbing for the vanity and they couldn't get the drawers to close and he wanted to cut it. We said talk to Alex and he said change the plumbing so we don't have to cut it. For me, even though there is more work for the plumber, I felt Alex was making sure we did it the right way instead of the fast way
- our neighbours used them in a major reno and we saw the main crew and they were always very respectful of the property and the people. It was the same for us as well.
- the main crew doesn't smoke so your house doesn't smell like cigarettes afterwards which was important to us because we have two babies. We have had contractors in the past doing smaller jobs and we had to vent out the house for two days because the whole house smelled of cigarette smoke (from them smoking outside and from bringing in that smell from their clothes). I wouldn't think this would be a deal breaker if it's a big renovation and but we had a small one and living at home

Things to keep in mind:
- there might be small details missed, but a simple text to Alex or talking to the crew and they fix it up right away - they want to make sure it's perfect and I really appreciated that
- if you're adding extra, ask about the cost / time ahead of time. We added a couple of things which ended up being more than we thought it would be (nothing against Artisan because they were transparent with their billing and said it would be extra, we just didn't realize how much extra). Saying this, they were honest with the additional time and materials spent and it wasn't doubled or tripled in price.

Alex and his team did a fantastic job with our main floor renovation. This was an extensive project that involved a new open concept living space, a change in the roofline to accommodate a cathedral ceiling, an all new kitchen with island, dining room and family room built-ins, flooring and a new staircase as well as a reconfigured entranceway and closet area. Alex did an excellent job keeping us informed of project progress and helping us to make decisions on project scope that also affected the budget. In addition to the excellent and detail oriented work of his team, he also brought in high quality sub-trades for the kitchen cabinetry, electrical and plumbing work, painting, drywall, masonry and tiling. Overall we are delighted with the quality of the work by Artisan to modernize and to beautify our home!

Let me tell you something about this guy!
Alex and his crew are great. He handled an absolutely massive renovation for us. Full main floor renovation (including complete kitchen and powder room remodel), structural walls removed and replaced with beams which required new footings to be dug in the basement. New flooring on the main floor, 90% of walls and ceilings removed to create new layouts or re-run plumbing or HVAC. New flooring, framing, drywall and lighting in the basement.
And a complete ensuite remodel and renovation.

He initially quoted the job for us in spring 2021 and after some dithering on my part, kept the quote price when I accepted about 2 months later (if you recall what was going on with prices at that time, that was a big deal). Renovation started September 2021 and was initially scheduled to be done by Christmas. Unfortunately some scope changes, supply line snarls and one truly, truly awful neighbour delayed completion until February. Delays were communicated in a timely manner and an updated schedule was provided as soon as issues were known.

Plumbing, electrical, HVAC, flooring, foundation, cabinets, masonry, framing, drywall, you name it, he either does or has a guy. He coordinated his sub-trades extremely well. We're over a year out from completion and there's been no issues that have arisen in the interim.

Highly recommend. 5 stars.

FAQs

The average cost of a basement renovation typically ranges from $10,000 to $35,000, depending on the size of the space, materials used, and the type of renovation. Basic finishing projects cost less, while full remodels that include bathrooms, bedrooms, or rental units cost more. Features like upgraded HVAC, larger egress windows, or custom finishes can also affect the final price. A professional consultation and detailed quote will help you understand costs upfront.

Most basement renovations take 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the size and complexity of the project. Simple basement finishing projects may be completed faster, while full remodels with plumbing, electrical, or structural work may take longer. An experienced basement renovation contractor can give you a clearer timeline after reviewing the space. Timelines can also be affected by permit approvals and inspections. Proper planning and experienced project management help keep renovations on schedule.

Yes, most basement renovations require permits to ensure the work meets local building codes and safety standards. Permits are usually needed for electrical, plumbing, structural changes, or adding bedrooms or rental spaces. Working with a professional basement renovation contractor helps simplify the process, as they can manage permit applications and inspections to ensure your renovation is safe and compliant. An experienced basement contractor can also help identify permit requirements before the project begins.

A basement renovation transforms underused space into functional living areas such as a family room, home office, guest suite, or rental unit. It can increase usable square footage, improve comfort, and add long-term property value.

Basement renovations can include finishing unfinished basements or full remodels. Common upgrades include adding bathrooms, bedrooms, living areas, laundry spaces, and entertainment zones. Practical upgrades like egress windows and HVAC improvements are also available.

Basements present unique challenges such as moisture control, limited natural light, and ceiling height constraints. An experienced contractor ensures these issues are addressed properly while delivering a safe, comfortable, and high-quality finished space.

  • Moisture control and waterproofing
  • Ceiling height and layout options
  • Lighting and window placement
  • Heating and ventilation needs
  • Storage requirements
Planning with a professional ensures your basement renovation is both practical and tailored to your lifestyle.
